Secret Service Director Admits Failure to Prevent Assassination Attempt on Trump

Kimberly Cheatle, Director of the United States Secret Service, acknowledged on Monday that the agency “failed” in its duty to prevent the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Cheatle, speaking before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, stated, “Our mission is to protect the nation’s leaders. On July 13, we fell short.” She took full responsibility for the lapse in security, describing the incident as “the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades.”
The assassination attempt occurred when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire with an AR-style rifle during Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump, who was only slightly injured, was targeted minutes after beginning his speech. Secret Service agents neutralized Crooks 26 seconds after the initial shots were fired. Investigators found that Crooks acted alone and had no clear ideological motive.
The shooting resulted in serious injuries to two attendees and the death of 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore from Freeport, Pennsylvania.
At the hearing, Republican Chairman James Comer criticized the agency, stating, “This tragedy was avoidable” and urged Cheatle to resign. He emphasized that the Secret Service, with its extensive resources and budget, must uphold its zero-fail standard but had failed both on July 13 and in the lead-up to the event.
