PSV Eindhoven Claims 25th Dutch Championship Title

Written by on May 6, 2024

PSV Eindhoven clinched their 25th Dutch championship title on Sunday, marking their first triumph since 2018. The victory was sealed with two games remaining in the season, following a spirited 4-2 win over Sparta Rotterdam at a sunlit Philips Stadion, amidst jubilant celebrations among fans.

This season has been remarkable for PSV, as they embarked on a 17-game unbeaten streak in the Eredivisie before succumbing to their first loss against NEC Nijmegen. Memorable victories against rivals Ajax and Feyenoord propelled PSV towards the title, with veteran striker Luuk de Jong’s remarkable form contributing significantly, making him the league’s joint top goalscorer with 27 goals.

While this season’s success echoes the glory days of PSV’s past, notably the legendary 1987/88 campaign, the Eredivisie trophy offers solace after three consecutive seasons of finishing as runners-up, watching rivals Ajax and Feyenoord claim the title.

Despite domestic triumphs, PSV’s European journey was cut short in the Champions League’s last 16 stage against Borussia Dortmund, after an impressive second-place finish in their group.

In contrast, Ajax, historically dominant in Dutch football, endured a disastrous season, currently languishing in fifth place in the Eredivisie, a far cry from their illustrious past. The club faced ignominy with a historic defeat against Feyenoord, turmoil in the boardroom, and violence in the stands, painting a stark contrast to their celebrated legacy.

Vitesse Arnhem faced relegation for the first time in 35 seasons due to a severe points deduction imposed by the Dutch federation for breaching league regulations.
