Osimhen’s Absence from Fiorentina Match Puts World Cup Qualifiers in Doubt

Reportedly, Osimhen was absent from Wednesday’s training session due to a muscle-related problem, instead undergoing physiotherapy and individualized workouts in the gym.

Meanwhile, Piotr Zielinski and Mario Rui trained separately from the main group, whereas Jens Lindstrom rejoined the team.

The Nigerian striker has been pivotal for Napoli this season, netting 15 goals in Serie A. However, his campaign has been marred by several injuries and his absence during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier in the year.

In the event of Osimhen’s unavailability, Giacomo Raspadori or Giovanni Simeone are likely candidates to lead the line for Napoli against Fiorentina.

Napoli’s defeat to Bologna last week saw them slip behind Fiorentina in the Serie A standings. To salvage their chances of securing eighth place or clinching a spot in the Conference League, they must secure victory in Florence.

However, the absence of Osimhen, last season’s Capocannoniere, is a significant setback for coach Francesco Calzona’s side.

Osimhen’s fitness for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic remains uncertain, raising concerns for Nigeria, particularly with Samuel Chukwueze and Bright Osayi-Samuel also facing doubts for the qualifiers.

On the transfer front, Chelsea’s interest in Osimhen has been widely reported. The Nigerian striker is reportedly keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with negotiations awaiting Chelsea’s offer to Napoli.

Regarded as one of the top strikers globally, Osimhen’s potential arrival at Chelsea could provide a solution to their attacking woes, with the player considered a significant upgrade on current options. Despite reported interest from other clubs like Paris Saint-Germain, Osimhen reportedly favors a move to the Premier League.
