ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST – Nigeria striker Paul Onuachu has expressed confidence ahead of the Super Eagles’ crucial World Cup qualifier against Benin today, while also looking forward to reuniting with his former coach, Gernot Rohr. The match will take place at Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Ivory Coast.

The Super Eagles, currently under pressure to secure their first win in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, were held to a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday. This marked Nigeria’s third consecutive draw in the qualifiers, raising concerns about their chances of advancing to the World Cup.

Despite these challenges, Onuachu remains optimistic about the team’s prospects against Benin. “It will be good to see him again and say hello because he gave me my first call-up. I thank him for that and I appreciate him. But that doesn’t stop us from going there and beating him,” Onuachu told Nigerian journalist Modo Victor. The Franco-German tactician, Gernot Rohr, who gave Onuachu his Super Eagles debut in 2019, now coaches Benin.

The Super Eagles, led by Coach Finidi George, are looking to capitalize on this fixture to regain momentum. They are favorites to win on paper, and a victory is crucial to improve their standing in Group C. Nigeria currently sits fifth among the six teams in the group. The group winners will automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The four best-ranked runners-up will enter play-offs, with winners advancing to an inter-continental tournament where six nations will compete for two places.

As Nigeria prepares for this vital encounter, fans are hopeful that the team can overcome recent setbacks and secure a much-needed win. The match against Benin offers the Super Eagles a perfect opportunity to bounce back and strengthen their World Cup qualification bid.
