Nnamdi Kanu Seeks Negotiations with Federal Government

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has indicated his intention to seek negotiations with the Federal Government under Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act. This announcement was made during a session at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday.
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in Kenya in June 2021, is facing terrorism-related charges. Through his lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, Kanu expressed his desire for reconciliation and amicable settlement, as stipulated in Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act. The section encourages the court to promote reconciliation and facilitate the amicable settlement of disputes.
Ejimakor presented two applications before the court: one to move Form 49 and another objecting to the court’s jurisdiction. He stated that if these applications are denied, they will invoke Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act to seek negotiations with the government.
In response, Adegboyega Awomolo, counsel to the Federal Government, informed the court that he lacked the authority to negotiate on behalf of the government and suggested that Kanu should approach the Attorney General of the Federation.
Justice Binta Nyako clarified that the court’s role was to hear cases, not to act as a solicitor for negotiations.
Kanu also addressed the court on the recent killings in the South-East, condemning the violence and asserting that IPOB adheres to non-violent principles. He distanced himself from the murders of soldiers in Abia State, emphasizing that IPOB’s struggle is for freedom and not for violence.
“I condemn in its entirety all of the killings because IPOB was founded on a non-violent principle, and we maintain that stand. We are fighting for freedom, so, how can we want violence? We want people to be free,” Kanu stated.
