Nigerian Students’ Body Rejects Fayemi’s Call for Minimum Wage Decentralization

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly criticized the recent suggestion by former Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi, advocating for the decentralization of minimum wage negotiations. Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, the National Clerk of the Senate for NANS, issued a statement on Monday denouncing Fayemi’s proposal as “anti-workers.”
Fayemi’s proposal, made last week, proposed that states should engage in separate negotiations with labour unions regarding the minimum wage. However, NANS vehemently opposes this idea, urging the Federal Government to disregard Fayemi’s suggestion and instead compel state governors to implement any new minimum wage agreed upon at the federal level.
Odunayo labeled Fayemi’s statement as “uncalled for” and warned that it could potentially strain the relationship between state governors and the federal government. He stressed the importance of maintaining a unified approach to minimum wage negotiations to prevent discord and ensure fair treatment of workers across the country.
Meanwhile, NANS, under the leadership of Pedro Obi, expressed full support for the demands of labour unions for better minimum wage conditions. The student body pledged unwavering support to President Tinubu’s administration in efforts to restore the nation’s prosperity and create conducive conditions for all Nigerians to thrive.
NANS emphasized the critical importance of prioritizing workers’ welfare by both federal and state governments, urging the implementation of policies aimed at improving the living standards of all Nigerians.
