In a significant show of support, the Nigerian House of Representatives has announced a donation of N100 million to Nigeria’s contingent for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris, France. The announcement was made by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session in the absence of Speaker Tajudden Abbas.
The donation, which will be sourced from the lawmakers’ salaries, is dedicated in honor of the late Hon. Ekene Abubakar Adams, former Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, who recently passed away. Kalu emphasized that this contribution underscores the House’s commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes and honoring the memory of their late colleague.
Addressing the athletes and officials present, Kalu expressed confidence in their abilities and encouraged them to strive for excellence, surpassing previous records. He called upon all Nigerians to emulate the gesture of the House and rally behind the athletes as they embark on their Olympic journey.
In addition to the House’s donation, Chairman of the House Committee on Army, Balele Aminu, personally donated $2,000 to Team Nigeria, further demonstrating the legislators’ support for the athletes.
The athletes, in response, thanked the House of Representatives for their generous support and pledged to represent Nigeria with pride and dedication during the Olympic Games, scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11.
This donation not only provides financial backing but also serves as a morale booster for Nigerian athletes as they prepare to compete on the global stage in Paris.
