OREGON, USA – Nigerian high jumper and national record holder Temitope Adeshina is celebrating her qualification for the Olympic Games for the first time, following a remarkable performance at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Championships in Oregon on Saturday.
Adeshina achieved a jump of 1.97m, setting a new national record, meet record, and personal best. This outstanding performance also met the Paris 2024 Olympic entry standard, securing her place at the upcoming Games.
Adeshina, 25, has been in excellent form this season, previously setting a new indoor national record with a jump of 1.96m at the Texas Tech Corky Classic in January. With her latest achievement, she now holds both the indoor and outdoor national records, surpassing the previous records held by Doreen Amata.
Despite finishing third in the NCAA women’s high jump based on countback behind Rose Yeboah and Elena Kulichenko, who both cleared the same height of 1.97m, Adeshina remains positive. “We are all winners because we all jumped the same height,” she said.
Adeshina’s qualification for the Olympics is a significant milestone in her career, showcasing her dedication and talent. She is also a silver medallist at the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius and has continued to make strides in her athletic journey.
In addition to Adeshina’s success, her sprint counterpart Rosemary Chukwuma also finished third in the women’s 100m, contributing to Texas Tech women’s team tying for seventh place at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships.
As Adeshina prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympics, the athletic community and fans in Nigeria are excited and hopeful for her continued success on the international stage.
