The Nigerian women’s football team, the Super Falcons, are gearing up for their long-awaited return to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament after a 16-year absence. Quarter-finalists in the 2004 Athens Olympics, the Falcons are set to land in Bordeaux, France, on Thursday night ahead of their group stage matches.
The team, led by nine-time African champions, faces a challenging group stage including Brazil, Spain, and Japan. They will be arriving in Bordeaux via an Air France flight from Spain, where they have been preparing. The delegation consists of 18 players, along with four alternate players and team officials, who will be accommodated at Hotel Mercure upon arrival just before midnight.
The Falcons’ last appearance in the Olympic football tournament was in 2008 in China, where they faced tough competition, including a match against eventual silver medallists Brazil. Since their debut in 2000 in Australia, the Falcons have been a significant presence in women’s football, showcasing their talent and determination on the international stage.
As they prepare to compete once again, the Falcons aim to make a mark and demonstrate their prowess in a sport that has evolved significantly since their initial participation as a demonstration sport in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
