Written by on June 18, 2024

Nigeria has clinched the bronze medal at the 2024 Chovken World Championship held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The announcement was made by Nura Kangiwa, the patron of the NSK polo team, in a statement released by Joesef Karim, the Media Assistant to the Vice President, African Region, International Chovken Federation.

Kangiwa, who also serves as the Chairman of the African Region of the International Chovken Federation, revealed that Nigeria secured the bronze after drawing 1-1 with Uzbekistan, earning points from their previous matches.

“This marks Nigeria’s debut in global Chovken competitions, an ancient equestrian sport similar to polo,” Kangiwa stated.

Detailing the journey to the bronze medal, Kangiwa noted Nigeria’s victories over Germany (5-0) and Poland (4-1), with a loss against Morocco (4-1) in the earlier stages of the championship.

The World Chovken Championship, which took place from June 10 to 16, saw participation from Turkey, Malta, Kuwait, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Poland, Germany, Nigeria, and the host country Azerbaijan.

Chovken, an ancient sport akin to polo, involves horse riders wielding sticks to maneuver a small ball into a goal post. Matches consist of two halves, each lasting for 15 minutes of effective playtime.

The Nigerian team comprised Yusuf Bello, Shehu Kangiwa, Mukhtar Adhama, and Abdulmalik Badamasi, under the leadership of Kangiwa.
