Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority Declares Airspace Safe and Secure

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has affirmed the safety and security of Nigerian airspace, countering recent online publications suggesting insecurity due to inadequate radar coverage.
In a press statement signed by Acting Director-General Capt. Chris Najomo, the NCAA emphasized its alignment with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) regarding comprehensive radar coverage across Nigeria. The statement clarified that recent violations of prohibited flight zones in Abuja were due to controlled flights straying into restricted airspace as a result of adverse weather conditions.
The NCAA confirmed that NAMA had complete radar footage of these incidents, including full details of the aircraft and operators involved. This capability is attributed to functional primary and secondary surveillance radars in Abuja, with similar installations in Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt.
To further enhance aviation infrastructure and radar coverage, the NCAA announced the addition of five new MSSR (Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar) stations in Obubra, Ilorin, Talata Mafara, Maiduguri, and Numan. These will augment the four existing radar centers, ensuring total coverage of the country’s airspace.
