The Mani Giving Back Foundation, spearheaded by Germany-based Michael Ani, is gearing up to host a transformative basketball programme in Ilupeju, Lagos, from July 24 to 28. The event, which aims to promote inclusivity and inspire young people, will see the participation of at least 250 children and adults, including those with disabilities, along with 30 coaches, Punch reports.
Ani, a two-time Special Olympics World Games Head Coach for Nigeria, shared his vision for the event, emphasizing its significance beyond sports. “This event promises to be a major milestone in our journey. It goes beyond promoting sports; it aims to inspire young people by demonstrating that dreams can be achieved regardless of challenges,” said Ani.
The programme will feature basketball games, skill clinics led by experienced coaches, and motivational sessions by top athletes and coaches. Ani highlighted the importance of prioritizing children living with disabilities, underscoring his commitment to fostering an inclusive Nigerian society.
Reflecting on his journey, Ani recounted his efforts to bridge the gap in sports opportunities for individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. “Partnering with the Special Olympics Nigeria, we established the first basketball team for people with disabilities,” he explained. Despite relocating to Germany for his professional basketball career, Ani’s dedication to the cause remained unwavering.
Over the years, Ani and his team have trained and prepared over 50 players with diverse abilities, leading them to represent Nigeria at prestigious events like the World Games in Los Angeles and Abu Dhabi. Through initiatives like the Unified Games, which promote inclusion and teamwork, Ani continues to champion opportunities for people with disabilities in sports.
Beyond basketball, the Mani Giving Back Foundation gives back to society by providing essential amenities, scholarships, and educational support to Nigerians. The upcoming programme represents a continuation of Ani’s commitment to empowering individuals and fostering a more inclusive and supportive community.
