Renowned Nigerian singer, actress, and activist Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. Onwenu, celebrated for her contributions to Nigerian music and film, died on Tuesday after performing at a birthday party for Stella Okoli in Lagos. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Muhammed Ahlim, spokesperson for the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), confirmed the news to Channels Television. “Yes, it is true. But we are yet to get an official statement from the family,” Ahlim said.

Born on January 31, 1952, in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s. Her debut album, *For the Love of You*, was released in 1981 and was followed by numerous other successful albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.” Onwenu’s influence extended beyond music; she also made significant contributions to Nollywood and held prominent political positions. She served as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Onwenu was honored with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011 for her contributions to Nigerian society.

Public figures have paid tribute to Onwenu following her death. Ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri described Onwenu as an “elegant stallion,” praising her natural charm and stage presence. Omokri reflected on their collaboration, stating, “It was one of the greatest honours of my life to collaborate with her and Panam Percy Paul on a charity single I executive produced. Onyeka Onwenu was a great asset to Nigeria and a significant star on the African continent and beyond. She will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in peace.”

Onwenu’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian music and film, but her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
