Lagos Government Demolishes Illegal Shanties on Gbagada-Bariga Drainage Channels

The Lagos State Government has started demolishing all marked shanties and illegal structures erected along the Gbagada-Bariga drainage channel. This action follows the expiration of a 48-hour eviction notice issued by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, to the owners of these illegal structures.
The recent heavy downpour last Wednesday caused severe flooding in the Gbagada area, resulting in significant hardship for motorists and residents. Wahab, via his official X handle, identified the presence of squatters as a major contributor to the recurring flooding in the area.
He stated, “Following the expiration of a removal notice to owners of shanties beside the Bariga-Gbagada Drainage Channel, operatives of the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance department from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources have commenced the removal of all shanties on the drainage setback to mitigate the flooding incidents.”
