Kenya President William Ruto Dismisses Entire Cabinet Amidst Widespread Protests

Written by on July 11, 2024

In a surprising move, Kenyan President William Ruto has dismissed all ministers from his Cabinet following a wave of anti-government protests nationwide. This decision, announced earlier today, Thursday, July 11, 2024, during a nationwide broadcast, exempts Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

President Ruto explained the rationale behind his decision, stating, “Upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.”

Ruto emphasized the need to involve other political stakeholders in reconstituting his Cabinet. “I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent and irreversible, implementation of radical programs to deal with the burden of debt, raise domestic resources, expand job opportunities, eliminate wastage and unnecessary duplication of government agencies, and slay the dragon of corruption,” he added.

In the interim, government operations will continue under the leadership of Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials.

This sweeping change comes in response to youth-led protests triggered by proposed tax hikes, which Ruto was forced to abandon. The demonstrations, which saw at least 39 people killed in clashes with the police and some protesters briefly storming parliament, have evolved into a broader campaign against perceived state extravagance and corruption, with growing calls for President Ruto to step down.
