JAMB Clears Itself of Blame for HND Graduates’ NYSC Issues

Written by on September 3, 2024

Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates recently barred from participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program have wrongly blamed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for their exclusion, according to a statement by the board.

Responding to accusations from prospective NYSC candidates, JAMB stated, “It is important to emphasize that JAMB has no involvement, authority, or control over the admissions process for HND candidates.”

In a statement released on Monday by its spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB clarified its role, saying, “For the avoidance of doubt, the Board shall be responsible for determining matriculation requirements and conducting examinations leading to undergraduate admissions, as well as for admissions to National Diploma and Nigerian Certificate in Education courses. However, the Board shall not be responsible for examinations or any other selective processes for postgraduate courses or any other courses offered by tertiary institutions.”

JAMB further explained that many of the students were admitted into their National Diploma (ND) programs without the Board’s knowledge, and while JAMB “graciously condoned and endorsed the said admission for ND programme,” the subsequent admission to HND was “unknown and irrelevant to the mandate of the Board.”

The statement warned that some candidates “have crossed the lines of criminality which the Board will soon appropriately address,” urging the public to “disregard the accusations labelled against the Board as it has no mandate on such matter.”
