The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has lauded the efforts of security agencies for their role in the safe release of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy, who were kidnapped ten months ago.

Dr. Popoola, a registrar at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna State, was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband, Nurudeen Popoola, a squadron leader, and her nephew, Folaranmi. Following extensive negotiations with their captors, her husband was freed on March 8, 2024.

In a statement released on Friday, Alaba Balogun, the Head of Information and Public Relations, expressed that the return of Dr. Popoola and her nephew is a significant relief for the healthcare community, which has demonstrated remarkable resilience and solidarity throughout this ordeal.

The statement noted, “We extend our profound gratitude to the Defence Headquarters, the dedicated troops, and all military personnel involved in this successful operation for their steadfast commitment to safeguarding our citizens.”

The ministry also recognized the important role played by various medical associations and professional bodies, stating, “We also deeply appreciate the efforts and tenacity of various medical associations and professional bodies, whose advocacy and encouragement have been invaluable in bolstering the morale of healthcare workers across Nigeria.”

Furthermore, the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of healthcare professionals nationwide. It acknowledged the courage and dedication of those in the medical field who continue to provide care despite the challenging circumstances they face.

The ministry emphasized its dedication to enhancing security measures and fostering a safe working environment for healthcare workers throughout the country. “Once again, we thank everyone who played a role in this positive outcome,” the statement concluded, reiterating its commitment to supporting the well-being and safety of healthcare providers in Nigeria.
