France striker, Olivier Giroud, has announced that he will retire from international football following the Euro 2024 championship in Germany.
Giroud, who has played for Arsenal and Chelsea in the past, was included in Coach Didier Deschamps’ provisional squad for the upcoming Euros.
“To be honest, this will be my last competition with Les Bleus. Obviously, I’m going to miss it a lot,” Giroud said in an interview with L’Equipe published on Thursday.
“After the Euro, it will be time for the French team to move on. We need to give way to the younger players. It’s important not to overstay. You have to find the right balance.
“I’ve always said that I was going to stop when my body asked me to. I think I’ve got two good years left. But as far as the French team is concerned, I think that’ll be the end of it,” the 37-year-old stated.
France, eliminated by Switzerland in the last 16 of Euro 2020, last won the European Championship in 2000. They will open their Euros campaign against Austria on June 17, followed by matches against the Netherlands and Poland.
Asked about his goals for the tournament, Giroud said, “My aim is to go as far as possible with this generation. If I win, aside from the Premier League, which is very tough to win, I could say I’ve won everything. As for reaching the 60-goal mark for the national team, it’s on our minds but not an obsession.”
Giroud currently holds the record for most goals scored for France, with 57 goals in 131 appearances. His contract with AC Milan is set to expire next month, and he has agreed to join Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC after the Euros.
Despite not scoring in the 465 minutes he played across six matches, Giroud was part of the French team that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
