David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has revealed intentions to establish a comprehensive road network program connecting the six geo-political zones of the country. This initiative aims to enhance transportation security, safety, and sustainability across Nigeria.
During an inspection visit to the km 47 axis of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project at Eleko, Lagos State, the Minister discussed the importance of this endeavor. The ongoing demolition around the km 3-4 of the highway necessitated the contractor’s relocation to handle the project.
The Minister disclosed that President Bola Tinubu directed the immediate design of the Sokoto-Badagry highway, a branch of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The Sokoto-Badagry Highway, spanning 1,000 kilometers, is currently undergoing design, awaiting approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
Umahi praised Hitech Construction Nigeria Limited for their efficient work on the project and expressed optimism about completing the 700 km highway within the tenure of President Tinubu’s administration.
The coastal highway project will serve as a vital transportation artery connecting the entire country, including spurs reaching the North and linking to neighboring countries like Cameroon. Umahi highlighted the significance of these developments in promoting national connectivity and economic growth.
Addressing concerns regarding the demolition exercise along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi reassured stakeholders that landmark properties remained unaffected. He emphasized the government’s commitment to following legal right-of-way regulations while considering public interest and economic benefits.
