The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken decisive action by sealing a Chinese supermarket within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
FCCPC officials carried out the closure on Monday after investigating reports of discrimination against Nigerian workers at the supermarket.
Previously, public outrage had erupted over the discriminatory policy implemented by the Chinese supermarket, which restricted entry to only Chinese nationals.
Shaibu Sanusi, the facility manager, highlighted the disparity, stating, “Nigerians from outside the complex do not shop, but Nigerians within can access it.”
It was revealed that the owner of the supermarket, Cindy Liu Bei, had fled the premises upon the FCCPC’s arrival. Workers, predominantly Nigerians, confirmed Bei’s departure, noting that she left with her family as captured on Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage.
In response to these developments, FCCPC officials proceeded to shut down the supermarket, underscoring the importance of combating discrimination and upholding consumer rights in Nigeria.
