Ayodele Olawande Faces Chants of ‘Hunger Dey’ as Protesters Reject His Address

Written by on August 1, 2024

Protesters at Eagles Square in Abuja disrupted an attempt by the Minister of State for Youths Development, Ayodele Olawande, to address them. As Olawande approached the crowd, his efforts to speak were drowned out by chants of “hunger dey,” making it impossible for him to communicate with the demonstrators.

After calming the crowd, Olawande explained that his visit was not intended to suppress the protest. He emphasized his solidarity with the protesters, stating, “I’m not here to fight you, I’m not here to ask you not to protest, it is your right. Like I said, I’ve been to over 100-500 protests.”

The minister also promised to speak with the police about their use of canisters against the protesters.

In response, the demonstrators have refused to relocate to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, citing a recent incident where a similar protest was conducted without police interference.
