Andy Murray Withdraws from Paris Olympics Singles

Written by on July 25, 2024

Andy Murray has announced his withdrawal from the men’s singles event at the Paris Olympics but will continue to compete in the doubles with partner Dan Evans, the two-time gold medallist confirmed on Thursday.

The 37-year-old British tennis star, who plans to retire after his fifth Olympic Games, is still recovering from recent back surgery. Murray’s decision to focus on the doubles is driven by his belief that it offers his best chance for another medal.

“I’ve taken the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” Murray stated. “Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together. I’m really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”

Murray, a former world number one, has an illustrious Olympic history, having won gold in singles at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Games, as well as silver in mixed doubles with Laura Robson in 2012.

His withdrawal from singles means his last appearance was a brief second-round match at Queen’s Club against Jordan Thompson last month, where he was forced to withdraw due to a spinal cyst.
