Andy Murray Announces Retirement from Tennis After Paris 2024 Olympics

Written by on August 2, 2024

Andy Murray has officially retired from tennis following his participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics, ending a distinguished 19-year career filled with major achievements and personal hurdles.

The 37-year-old Murray revealed via his X handle late Thursday that the Olympics would be his final tournament, closing a chapter on his professional tennis journey. He humorously remarked, “Never even liked tennis anyway.”

Murray’s last competitive match was in the men’s doubles quarterfinals at Roland Garros, where he and British partner Dan Evans faced off against the American duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, losing 6-2, 6-4. Despite the defeat, Murray expressed satisfaction with ending his career on his own terms, a decision made all the more poignant due to his recent struggles with injuries.

Murray had withdrawn from the singles competition at the Paris Olympics, choosing to focus on the men’s doubles with Evans in hopes of securing another medal. This move mirrored his decision at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where he also withdrew from the singles due to an injury.

Murray’s illustrious career includes two Wimbledon titles (2013 and 2016), a US Open win (2012), and achieving the world number-one ranking in 2016. His Olympic accomplishments are especially notable, with gold medals in singles at London 2012 and Rio 2016, and a silver medal in mixed doubles at the London Games with Laura Robson.

Throughout his career, Murray faced significant challenges, particularly with his hip. After undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, he managed to continue competing, although not at his previous peak. Despite these obstacles, his resilience and determination have earned him widespread admiration within the tennis community.

Murray’s impact on the sport is profound, marking him as one of the greatest British tennis players of all time.
