Ajaero Criticizes FG’s 35% Pay Raise, Advocates for ₦615,000 Living Wage

Written by on May 1, 2024

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, criticized the Federal Government’s announcement of a salary increase ranging between 25% and 35% for civil servants, terming it as “mischievous.” Ajaero expressed concern about the timing of the announcement, which coincided with the global observance of Workers’ Day. He highlighted that the previous minimum wage of N30,000 had expired on April 18, and discussions on a new minimum wage were supposed to have concluded by now.

Despite the inauguration of a Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage in January, the government has failed to implement its recommendations, according to Ajaero. He lamented that the current minimum wage is inadequate to cater to the needs of workers, especially considering the rising cost of living.

Ajaero further stated that the Organised Labour has proposed a living wage of N615,000 for civil servants, taking into account various essential expenses such as housing, utilities, food, healthcare, education, clothing, sanitation, and transportation. He emphasized that this proposed living wage aims to ensure the basic well-being of workers and their families.
