Africa Positioned to Lead Global Renewable Energy Agenda, Says AfDB President
Written by Jerry Alomatu on May 28, 2024
Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group, has asserted that Africa is poised to take the lead in driving the global agenda on renewable energy and green transitions.
Speaking at a media conference in Nairobi during the ongoing AfDB Annual Meetings 2024, Adesina highlighted Africa’s abundant solar potential and emphasized the continent’s pivotal role in advancing green energy initiatives worldwide.
Adesina underscored Africa’s inherent advantage in renewable energy, citing the continent’s vast solar potential as a catalyst for driving global energy transitions.
With approximately 11 terawatts of solar potential, Africa boasts the highest solar potential globally, accompanied by unparalleled levels of solar radiation. Adesina emphasized that as the world transitions towards renewable energy, Africa will play a central role in harnessing renewable energy sources to propel global progress.
Furthermore, Adesina noted Africa’s strategic position in emerging sectors such as green hydrogen, ammonia, fertilizers, and jet fuels, all of which require renewable energy sources like solar energy. Africa’s rich reservoir of natural resources, including platinum, copper, and lithium, positions the continent as a key player in the burgeoning Electric Vehicle (EV) market.
Adesina emphasized the importance of strategically harnessing these resources to drive Africa’s transformation and assert its prominence in global value chains.
In addition to renewable energy, Adesina emphasized the pivotal role of agriculture in Africa’s transformation narrative. With a significant portion of the world’s uncultivated arable land located within its borders, Africa holds the key to global food security. Adesina stressed the imperative for Africa to leverage its agricultural potential to meet the needs of a growing global population and shape the future of food production worldwide.
Adesina concluded by asserting that Africa’s transformation will be driven by maximizing its existing resources and harnessing its potential to drive rapid development. As Africa charts its course on the global stage, Adesina emphasized the importance of ensuring that the continent shapes the future trajectory for generations to come.
