The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported growing concerns among off-campus students due to recent violent incidents that have led to fatalities.
Akinpelumi stated, “In light of the recent security concerns in the Akungba Akoko community, the management of Adekunle Ajasin University wishes to assure our students and parents that the institution is fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students, both on campus and in the surrounding host communities. The management recognizes the seriousness of the prevailing security situation around Akungba community and the impact it has had on our students’ sense of security.”
He emphasized that the university has taken proactive measures by collaborating with relevant security authorities. This includes the immediate deployment of additional security personnel to increase patrols on campus and in the surrounding communities, aiming to deter criminal activities and apprehend suspects.
Akinpelumi noted, “The university is also working closely with the state Commissioner of Police and other security agencies to develop a coordinated response to the security challenges. Regular meetings and strategies are being developed to ensure aligned efforts to protect students.”
The university is also fostering stronger relationships with the host community through dialogue and collaboration, involving community leaders and stakeholders to create a united front against crime and improve overall safety.
Additional security measures include increased surveillance, improved lighting in critical areas, and regular security patrols to ensure a safe learning environment.
The university’s management is actively engaging with the student body and paramilitary organizations on campus to promote safety awareness. Akinpelumi added, “Students are encouraged to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and utilize available safety resources.”
“We want to reassure that the safety of our students is our top priority. The university’s management is dedicated to creating a secure environment where students can focus on their studies without fear,” Akinpelumi stated.
He expressed appreciation for the cooperation and patience of students and parents as the university works diligently to address the security issues, noting their support and vigilance are vital in ensuring the safety of the university community.
Akinpelumi also urged anyone with useful information on security to contact the University’s Security Unit or the Public Relations Unit.
Previously, the President of the Students’ Union Government, Oyindamola Boladale, wrote to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, calling for enhanced security in the university community. Boladale highlighted recent incidents of armed robbery that have led to the loss of student lives and belongings, transforming the Akungba community into a dangerous area.
